Bury Involvement Group - Community Crisis Supporter / Crisis Counsellor

Bury Involvement Group (BIG) in Mental Health is an independent charity run by, and for, people with personal experience of mental and emotional distress. The purpose of our charity is to build a healing and compassionate community for those in need of sanctuary and support. We support adults in the community and on the psychiatric ward in Bury, who experience a range of mental health conditions. We are excited to have secured funding allowing us to develop and deliver a new community based crisis service for adults in the area. The Bury Peer Led Crisis Service will provide a high quality, person centred, service in a non-clinical environment within the community to people experiencing mental health crisis and at risk of suicide.

As Crisis Supporter / Crisis Counsellor will interact, communicate and build relationships based on mutuality with adults experiencing crisis. You will work alongside the Service Lead to provide out of hours therapeutic face to face, and occasional telephone crisis support within the service, through a mutual negotiation of the visitor’s needs. You will adopt a collaborative approach to working with visitors, keeping the emphasis on their strengths and positive qualities, whilst supporting them to recognise and develop their own strategies for crisis prevention and management. You will support the Service Lead with the coordination of visitor referrals and handovers, whilst supporting the Service Lead with the evaluation, monitoring, and development of the service.

We wish to recruit someone with personal experience of mental distress and substantial experience of working with people with mental health problems. This must include experience of working with people at risk of suicide and selfharm.

We are looking for a reflective individual with a demonstrable ability to build positive therapeutic relationships with adults experiencing mental health crisis. You will need to be able to communicate with visitors clearly and effectively using nonclinical language. You will need to have proven experience supporting adults with mental health conditions using recovery orientated approaches. You will need to be able to work effectively as part of a team, while being highly organised and planning and prioritising your work.
