VOCAL Skills, Work & Poverty

According to the Joseph Roundtree Foundation, although paid employment reduces the risk of poverty compared to being unemployed, in work poverty has risen to 56% of all people in poverty. This change has been dramatic for children, with 7 out of 10 living in poverty within working families. The risk of in work poverty is also higher for workers with disabilities, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Workers, those in part-time work, lone parents and carers.

Salford’s refreshed Anti-Poverty Strategy restates commitments to prioritise addressing the root causes of poverty.

This VOCAL Forum will have guest speakers from:

  • Salford City Council - showcasing the recently launched Anti-Poverty Strategy
  • Unlimited Potential - speaking about the work that is being done in Salford to improve pay & employment standards
  • Salford Citizens Advice Bureau - speaking about support for people to maximise their household income and tackle debt.

The forum will be of particular interest to those VCSE organisations working with people with disabilities, Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic workers, lone parents, carers and VCSE organisations working to reduce poverty. The forum will also provide the opportunity for the voices of the people you work with who are experiencing in work poverty to be heard, and for your organisation to influence the Anti-Poverty Strategy action plan for 2021 to 2024.
