DBS checks during COVID-19

Here at Salford CVS we offer a DBS service for organisations across Greater Manchester for paid staff and volunteers.

When COVID-19 hit and the country went into lockdown we still wanted to offer a DBS service to our members and organisations across Greater Manchester so you could continue to recruit paid staff and volunteers to support the great work that you were doing.

The DBS changed their rules around seeing ID checking guidelines in March, you can now check ID via a video call where you can match the ID with the information which is on the DBS form.

For further guidance on checking ID via video call is on the government website.

There is lots of confusion around eligibility and applying for a DBS check.

It is common for organisations to think that it is best practice for their staff and volunteers to apply for a DBS regardless of the role they are doing. However, there is strict guidance on who can and who cannot apply for an enhanced DBS check - your volunteer or staff member's role must meet this criteria.

The easiest way to check if the role is eligible is by completing the DBS eligibility tool on the Government website where you will be asked 4 or 5 questions about the role and will then tell you if the role is eligible for a DBS check and if so what level of check you can apply for.

Once you have established that you are eligible for a DBS check then please get in touch with Salford CVS on 0161 787 7795 to arrange for your DBS to be completed.

The cost of a volunteer DBS is £16 per application and a paid worker is £61 for a check with Salford CVS. A DBS check does not have an expiry date but good practice is to renew every 2 to 3 years. Alternatively, if you don’t want to keep renewing your DBS why not sign up to the update service next time you renew your DBS, this is quick and easy but needs to be done within 19 calendar days of when your certificate has been printed. For further information please click here.

If you would like any further information on how to apply for a DBS check or if you are unsure if your job role is eligible then please call Salford CVS on 0161 787 7795 and ask to speak with Gill, Sharon or Helen.
