Guest blog: Trustees' Week - inspiration to take action

""

In this guest blog, Bronagh McCloskey, Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Responsibility at Talk Talk shares how a Trustees' Week virtual event delivered by Salford CVS has inspired members of the Talk Talk team to take action and get involved with local charities as trustees:

At TalkTalk, we wanted to think about how best to support our colleagues to work with the local community. After speaking to Claire Roberts and Lesmond Taylor from Salford CVS, we decided to promote charity trusteeships as a great way to use the skills and expertise of TalkTalk colleagues for the benefit of the wider community.

Salford CVS worked with us to organise a webinar for our colleagues during Trustee Week 2nd – 6th November 2020 and our event took place on Wednesday 4th November.

We worked together to design a session to explain the role of trustees and to hear first-hand from two Trustees from local charities; Sam Cook, Penderels Trust and Gemma Griffin, Salford Citterns Advice Bureau who gave an in-depth explanation about their roles as trustees and the importance of volunteering.

Anne-Marie from Salford CVS team provided some great tips and advice about how to identify your passion and make sure your volunteering aligns with what motivates you in your personal and professional life. We also had the chance to ask practical questions about how to choose a charity as well as the type of work and commitment involved.

TalkTalk staff found the session hugely valuable, saying they learnt a lot and now felt confident and enthused to seek out trustee opportunities.

One attendee said:

“Thank you for organising the session with Salford CVS – I found it really useful. It is something I have been thinking about for a while. Never done any work with a charity before and this has given me the inspiration to take some action.”

We’re really delighted to be able to collaborate in this way and will continue to work with Salford CVS and really plug into the local voluntary community.
