The Salford Archeology and History Society is embarking on a fascinating project
'Buried Lives' is a project focused on surveying the lives of women buried in cemeteries across the Salford area, beginning in Swinton.
Women are noticeably underrepresented in the spaces of historical record dominated by men. In addition to providing a much-needed voice for women in the field, the project hopes to gain an insight into historical work practices, lifestyles, and employment records. Addresses can be used to examine travel patterns, the growth of local industries, housing stock, and much more. It will provide a fantastic overview of the socio-economic landscape of late-19th and early-20th century Salford.
The society intends to develop a database of women buried at Swinton Cemetery, featuring details about employment status, spouses, and addresses. This will be cross-referenced with an additional database covering mill types, employees, facilities, pay, and more. Combined with information sourced from historical archives, newspapers, and trade union records, this will enable them to paint a vivid picture of the evolution of the Swinton and Pendlebury areas and their eventual decline.
The Salford Archeology and History Society ultimately intend to secure funding - allowing them to grow through the building of a website so they can expand the project further across Salford.
