The Migrant Destitution Fund supports migrant people who have "no recourse to public funds" - a policy which leaves people unable to meet their basic needs, not supported by the state and not allowed to do paid work to support themselves. People supported by the Fund are mostly asylum seekers and people whose right to remain isn't recognised by the Home Office (e.g. because a relationship breaks down). Many eventually win the right to remain...but it is a long process. It traps people in destitution.
There are three key ways you can support the fund:
1) Tell your friends and contacts about the fund and encourage them to donate via LocalGiving. Until 9th November, donations are being doubled by the Local Giving fundraising platform, meaning anything people can give in those two weeks will count for even more.
2) Invite the Migrant Destitution Fund GM to speak at an online group, forum, workplace or other meeting you are involved with. It could be a church meeting, book or hobby group, or even just your team meeting if they'd like to know more.
3) Follow the fund on Facebook and Twitter, share their social media posts on your own social media channels.
The end goal is that no one will be excluded from society because of their immigration status, but for the time being there is a desperate need for the Fund.
The Migrant Destitution Fund GM cannot meet that need without you, so in Ruvimbo's own words:
"Thanks to everyone who is taking care of us, who helps on behalf of us. Thank you very much for the Fund. It is helping us to keep on going."
