Trustees' Week runs from the 13th to the 17th November 2017.

Salford CVS Trustee Training

Trustee training is a regular offer at Salford CVS delivered on a bi-monthly basis from our training room. Salford CVS are also happy to provide bespoke training for Trustee boards in Salford and our bespoke training can be adapted to suit the needs of the board. We offer a range of topical issues for boards to select from. For further details contact Lesmond Lesmond.taylor@salfordcvs.co.uk or call 0161 787 7795.

Quick trustee facts

  • There are approximately 196,000 charities in the UK (167,000 charities in England and Wales, 24,000 in Scotland, 5,000 registered in Northern Ireland).
  • And just over 1 million trustees (of which some 850,000 are in England and Wales, 180,000 in Scotland and 30,000 in Northern Ireland)
  • From NCVO and CCNI research, we know just under half the UK’s trustees are women
  • The average trustee in England and Wales is 59 years old, and 55 in Northern Ireland.
  • There are many young trustees too with some 86,000 trustee positions held by 16-34 year olds (of which 2,611 in Northern Ireland).

That said, over the past few years the climate for trustees to operate in has been challenging; with high profile closures, funding practices called into question, marketing scandal’s and data protection breaches. Alongside the uncertainty of Brexit, the reduction of central and local government funding/contracts, trustees are having to do more with less and the new General Data Protection Regulations on the horizon, is still to be contended with.

Trustees are volunteers who give their time to navigate charities through ever changing circumstances and situations, year in and year out. Trustees deserve to be celebrated. Hence the reason for Trustee Week which is a national celebration of the good work, leadership, dedication and skill of these none paid volunteers.

This year Salford CVS held a programme of interactive Trustee training to celebrate Trustee Week 13 -17 November. The session was led by our guest speaker Chris Hook, Hempsons, Associates.

Recent news and reports

Chris provided an overview of recent news with the potential to be of concern to trustees;

Chris further highlighted a report on “Tackling Abuse and Mismanagement” which underlined 3 key strategic risks and 4 wider themes of interest to trustees;

  • Fraud, financial crime and financial abuse
  • Safeguarding
  • Abuse of charities for terrorist-related purposes
  • Governance (conflicts, private benefit and decision-making)
  • Charities facing financial distress
  • Fundraising
  • Registration compliance

The rest of the session looked at charity structures, duties and responsibilities of trustees, competencies and skills, standard of care, safeguarding both property and reputation, the role of the board and relationship with the chief executive, the effectiveness of the board and decision making and conflicts of interest.

Salford CVS are grateful for the support of Hempsons Solicitors who presented our special Trustees Training session for Trustee Week 2017.
