Organisation description: Meninos Oldham sees the importance of community projects for our youth and we are passionate about helping young people achieve their potential. We strive to support our 7 to 18 year olds while they forge friendships and interact with other creative young people and adults, developing their existing creative talents while gaining confidence and knowledge of other world cultures. Our outreach programme aims to integrate children from different local schools and communities. Through our drumming and dance classes, young people gain a sense of community whilst furthering themselves as performers and opening themselves up to new opportunities and skills.
Meninos Oldham provides free weekly sessions in percussion, dance, and Capoeira (the famous Brazilian martial art based dance) for young people aged between 7 and 18. We offer a wide programme of creative activities to suit all ages and abilities, and no previous experience is required. Classes are delivered by friendly professional tutors and choreographers from the UK and Brazil, and participants will improve co-ordination and skills while having fun. We support charities with fundraising events, and showcase the talents of our young people with performances all over the UK. Opportunities for Youth: Meninos Oldham allows its musicians and dancers the chance to work alongside other like-minded young people. Our fun, relaxed and supportive environment allows its members to develop their skills whilst actively encouraging them to become mentors to new group members. Meninos Oldham offers young people the opportunity to perform all over the UK. Meninos Oldham draws inspiration from Meninos Do Morumbi; a well established social project in São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1996, this project has helped over 4,000 Brazilian children and adolescents escape the ties of poverty and delinquency by providing an alternative lifestyle through the expressive arts. Merinos Do Murrumba offers a diverse curriculum of creative art forms such as drumming, dance, vocal training, and costume making, along with educational courses such as English and I.T. to improve chances of integration into employment. Children are also provided with food and where necessary family support. Merinos Oldham have built a close relationship with Meninos Do Morumbi through several years of exchange based projects. In 2003, Meninos Oldham invited project Director Flavio Pimenta to bring several of the group to the UK to hold percussion and dance workshops. Since these initial sessions a strong bond has formed between our groups, and our shared vision of the development and encouragement of young people has enabled us to maintain an exchange programme which benefits members of both the UK and Brazilian communities.
Activity Days of Week: Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Core Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9-5.
