Organisation description: Migrant Support (MS) is a registered charity dedicated to empowering people from diverse migrant and minority ethnic backgrounds, including refugees, new arrivals, EU citizens, transnational families and first-generation migrants, as well as people with complex or additional needs, including older people. We work primarily, though not exclusively, with communities in the Northwest of England. Our holistic, community-focused approach helps people overcome language, social, economic, and employment barriers; build independence and resilience; improve their skills and confidence; and build meaningful connections within their local communities.
Our work combines accessible education and skills development with well-being, community engagement and practical support. We provide English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) from Pre-Entry to Level 1/2, alongside digital inclusion training and tailored employability skills, including accessible online English language provision. We offer creative projects like Well-being through Art and British Values through Performances, along with community events and activities to reduce isolation, strengthen confidence, and encourage social connections. When people face practical difficulties accessing essential services, we provide the information, signposting, and referrals they need to identify and access specialist support, build more stable, independent lives, and avoid isolation.
Although our main offices are located in Manchester, MS has maintained a sustained track record of working with various locations in Greater Manchester, including Salford residents, for approximately five years. Our work in Salford initially grew through ESOL provision for Hong Kong BN(O) communities and has expanded to support migrants from a range of backgrounds across the city. In the last year alone, approximately 60 Salford residents participated in our structured ESOL provision; around 20 took part in our well-being and cultural activities, including well-being through Art and British Values through Performances; and more than 80 Salford residents engaged with us through community events, open days, and outreach activities. This represents more than 160 participant engagements during the year, although these figures do not necessarily represent 160 unique individuals, and we excluded children and family members.
MS also has worked in partnership with Church Action on Poverty since 2018, supporting Self-Reliant Groups (SRGs) to build confidence, mutual support and practical skills. Through this work, participants have developed ideas for small community businesses, explored self-employment and learned about setting up Community Interest Companies (CICs), strengthening financial resilience and independence.
Through this sustained engagement, Migrant Support has built established, trusting relationships with Salford's migrant communities. We are committed to strengthening our presence and partnerships in Salford, working alongside local voluntary, community and statutory organisations to improve access to education, employment, well-being opportunities, community connections and appropriate support for Salford residents.
