Anti-Slavery Day is a chance for everyone to stand against modern slavery and human trafficking.
Held each year on 18th October, Anti-Slavery Day raises awareness of the millions of people affected by exploitation around the world, including here in the UK. It is a day to recognise survivors, understand the signs of modern slavery and take practical action to help create a society where everyone can live in freedom.
Modern slavery can take many forms, including forced labour, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, criminal exploitation and human trafficking. It is happening in communities across the UK, including in places we pass every day, such as restaurants, care homes, building sites, nail bars and car washes.
People experiencing exploitation are often hidden in plain sight. Many feel too afraid to leave, too isolated to speak out or too controlled to ask for help. Threats, debt, violence and coercion can make it feel impossible to get help.
Modern slavery can affect anyone, regardless of their age, background or nationality. By recognising that it can happen anywhere, we can be better prepared to notice concerns, speak up safely and ensure no one is left unseen or unheard.
This year’s Slavery Memorial Day event in Salford to honour the victims of slavery and educate our community on this important part of history is taking place at the Salford Civic Centre on 21st October.
