Soul Purpose 360 launches #DefinitionRedefined, giving Black women and girls the power to define their own lives and shape a proposed National Commission. The survey launches on Monday 26th October and closes on 31st January 2027.
For the first time, Black women and girls across Britain are being asked a simple, radical question: who are you, in your own words?
The National Survey of Black Women & Girls in Britain, will be the first national survey dedicated solely to the lives, needs and ambitions of Black women and girls across the Britain. #DefinitionRedefined, it is open to women aged 18 and over and to girls aged 16 and 17.
Past research has either looked at Black Britons as a whole or at a single issue, such as maternity care. This survey looks at the whole of Black women's and girls' lives, and lets them set the terms.
The findings will form the evidence base for a proposed National Commission, putting Black women's and girls' own definitions in front of the people who make decisions about health, housing, education, work and public services.
A short window, and a lot at stake
Soul Purpose 360 is calling for at least 2,000 voices, with an ambition of 5,000. Every response strengthens the case for the Commission; every missing voice weakens it.
Palma Black, Founder and CEO of Soul Purpose 360, said: “For too long, Black women and girls in Britain have been described, counted and decided about by everyone except ourselves. This is the first time we've been given a national space to say who we are, in our own words. What we say in the next three months will shape a National Commission and the decisions that follow it. If we don't speak now, others will keep speaking for us. So I'm asking every Black woman and girl in Britain: take part, be counted, and then pass it on."
SP360 Member, Norma Powell said: "This is not just a survey; it is a powerful catalyst for change. Black women and our communities deserve to be heard in our own voices, sharing our lived experiences. The evidence will speak clearly, leaving no room for guesswork. This is our moment to lead, be seen, valued and considered, and fearlessly redefine our narrative for generations to come."
Designed with women, for women
The survey was tested with Soul Purpose 360 members, and their feedback shaped it. Comfort breaks are built in so women can take it at their own pace. We are encouraging women to bring friends, family, church members or colleagues together around a kitchen table, after a service, in a book club or online host Conversation Gatherings - our free pack has everything you need downloadable via the website.
