GMAVSG provides advice on benefits and compensation for people with asbestos diseases, campaigns for better benefits and compensation, and organises two support groups for people who have lost a loved one to an asbestos disease and for people with mesothelioma. The Worker concentrates on the advice on benefits and compensation, occasionally assisting with other work.
- Provide comprehensive advice on benefits, and basic information / signposting on compensation, to people with asbestos diseases. This is through home visits. Training will be provided on industrial injuries benefits and compensation for people with asbestos diseases.
- Administration. Admin relating to the worker’s benefits caseload, but also relating to the support groups, our campaigning, and the wider running of the charity. Experience of using Microsoft Office and good general IT skills are essential as we are mostly ‘paperless’.
- Covering the helpline. All workers, including the GMAVSG Coordinator, will have days when they cover the helpline. On these days, they will also deal with incoming post and emails.
- Assisting with running the support groups.
- Assisting with campaigning.
Prior experience of running support groups and campaigning is desirable but not essential. An ability to empathise with asbestos victims and a passion to see justice done for them is vital!
The GMAVSG Coordinator will take the lead on our support groups and on campaigning, but the Worker will need to assist from time to time. Training will be provided where necessary. There is scope for the Worker to get more involved with these aspects of the work if this can be managed alongside advice service demands.
Email info@gmavsg.org or phone 0161 258 0166 for application form, job description and person specification for either post. We will be happy to answer any questions about them.
