Description:

As a volunteer, you will support people experiencing homelessness to access healthcare and improve their health outcomes. This involves providing one-to-one advocacy, helping clients prepare for and attend appointments, understand medical information, and speak up for themselves. This can also involve helping with IT literacy or be a less client facing role if that is your preference. You’ll maintain regular contact with clients, report safeguarding concerns, and share feedback to improve services. The role is flexible within weekday working hours and may involve short-term or longer-term support depending on client needs. It will involve some time spent in the main office in Swan Street but primarily will be community based within Salford.

Skills and qualifications that may be needed or developed:

This role requires strong communication and listening skills, reliability, and a positive, solution-focused attitude. Volunteers should be able to respond effectively to information, maintain good timekeeping, and communicate clearly with clients and colleagues. Lived experience of homelessness or multiple disadvantage is a requirement for this role, as it enables authentic peer support and advocacy.
Shelter provides comprehensive induction and ongoing development, including training in Equality & Diversity, Health & Safety, Data Protection, and Safeguarding. Alongside a specific Homeless Health Peer Advocacy in-person training. Volunteers also have access to internal learning programmes, on-the-job support, and reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses in line with policy.
