Volunteer Opportunities

Salford Family Hubs are places in the local community where different organisations, including the community and voluntary sector, work together, to offer a one stop shop for families with children aged 0-19 and up to 25 for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The four Family Hubs are spread across the city with some services being delivered from various satellite buildings and community venues. Services include support for during pregnancy and after birth, child health, targeted early help, relationships, parenting, SEND provision, perinatal parent infant mental health services (PPIMHS) and youth service provision.
The Family Hubs offer a warm and welcoming space where families can access information and support and have a say on what could be delivered. Early Help Practitioners are based at your local Family Hub and are there to support families. We use the evidence-based Salford Family Partnership Model to help you achieve positive outcomes. We offer advice on child health, managing behaviour, sleep issues, feeding and more.
Purpose of the Role
Welcome Volunteers help create a warm, friendly, and calm environment for parents, carers, and children attending the Winton Family Hub for the Midwifery and health visiting 0-19 clinic. Volunteers provide a welcoming first point of contact, help families feel at ease while they wait, and support the Family Hub team with simple, practical tasks that keep the drop-in running smoothly.
As a Welcome Volunteer, your role may include:
• Greeting and welcoming families attending the drop-in
• Helping parents and carers sign in on arrival
• Offering a friendly, reassuring presence for people who may be visiting for the first time
• Providing basic information about the drop-in (e.g., waiting times, where to sit)
• Signposting families to the correct waiting area
• Keeping the reception and waiting space tidy, organised, and calm
• Supporting the Health Visitor team with simple admin tasks as needed
• Displaying leaflets or information on noticeboards
• Chatting with parents and carers while they wait and helping them feel comfortable
• Listening to visitors in a supportive, non-judgmental way (without giving advice)
Benefits to You
• Experience supporting families and working in a Family Hub environment
• Build confidence in communication, admin skills, and teamwork
• Training provided
• Shadowing opportunity with the Family Hub Information Officer
• Chance to contribute to a calm and supportive space for local families
• Travel expenses reimbursed
• A certificate or reference after your volunteering period
Please note: Before you begin the role, you’ll need to be available for a 6‑week induction on Friday mornings. During this time, you’ll be paired with our Family Hub Information Officer, who will guide you through the role step by step and help you feel confident with all the tasks involved. Once you’ve found your feet and feel comfortable, you’ll start volunteering independently on Wednesday mornings at the hub.

You don’t need any formal qualifications — just a friendly smile and a caring, confident approach.
Because this role involves speaking with parents, carers, and families, you’ll need to be able to communicate clearly in English. This includes being comfortable holding conversations, listening carefully, and understanding the information families share with you. English does not need to be your first language — you just need to feel confident using it in everyday interactions.
This role is perfect if you’re someone who:
- Loves greeting people and helping them feel at home
- Feels confident talking with a wide range of visitors, including parents and families
- Stays calm and reassuring, especially when supporting new parents
- Listens with patience and understanding
- Enjoys working with others to create a smooth, welcoming environment
- Can be relied on to turn up and support the team
- Keeps information private and treats families with respect
